Description

The Worldwide Solar Model 1 – 10° Aluminium Ballast Solar Mounting System is a premium mounting solution specifically designed for ground-mounted, garden and flat roof solar installations. Manufactured from high-strength, corrosion-resistant aluminium, Model 1 combines structural strength with straightforward installation, providing a reliable and durable foundation for residential, commercial and off-grid photovoltaic systems.

The optimised 10° fixed tilt angle supports efficient solar energy generation while maintaining excellent stability in outdoor environments. Its ballast design eliminates the need for permanent concrete foundations or ground penetration, making installation faster, more flexible and easier to relocate when required.

Worldwide Solar Model 1 has been engineered in accordance with EN 1991-1-4:2005 (Eurocode – Wind Actions). The manufacturer has confirmed that this is equivalent to the corresponding British Standard for structural wind loading. The calculations are based on a 30 m/s sustained mean wind speed (108 km/h / 67 mph), Terrain Category III and an assumed installation height of up to 10 metres.

The required ballast depends on the mounting configuration, local wind conditions and site exposure. Ballast values are provided for Wind Fetch Categories I–IV and for both single-direction and opposing-direction mounting configurations.

Typical Ballast Requirements per Ballast Stone

Wind Fetch Category Configuration A Configuration B
I 28 kg 13 kg
II 36 kg 18 kg
III 45 kg 23 kg
IV 55 kg 29 kg

Configuration A – Single-Direction Mounting
All four solar panels are installed at a fixed 10° tilt facing the same direction. This arrangement is suitable where the array is intended to generate energy from one principal orientation.

Configuration B – Opposing-Direction Mounting
The four solar panels are installed in two opposing rows, with each row facing in the opposite direction. This configuration generally requires less ballast per stone than Configuration A.

Ballast Requirement
Each complete Worldwide Solar Model 1 four-panel mounting system requires 12 solid concrete ballast stones. The table shows the recommended minimum weight of each individual stone according to the Wind Fetch Category and mounting configuration.

Recommended Ballast Stones

Worldwide Solar has identified the following solid concrete block sizes that fit the Model 1 mounting system:

  • 440 × 100 × 215 mm (L × W × H) — approximately 23 kg
  • 440 × 150 × 215 mm (L × W × H) — approximately 34 kg

These suggested block sizes are suitable for most scenarios shown in the ballast table.

The approximately 23 kg block is suitable for Configuration B, Wind Fetch Categories I–III.

The approximately 34 kg block is suitable for all Configuration B categories and Configuration A, Wind Fetch Category I.

For Configuration A, Wind Fetch Categories II–IV, these block sizes do not provide sufficient individual stone weight. Heavier solid concrete ballast stones or another suitable ballast arrangement must therefore be used.

Only solid, normal-weight concrete blocks should be used. Lightweight, hollow or aerated concrete blocks are not suitable for use as ballast. The stated weights are approximate and may vary according to the concrete density and manufacturer.

Ballast values are based on the manufacturer’s calculations using a reference solar panel size of 2000 × 1134 × 30 mm. Actual ballast requirements may vary depending on local wind conditions, site exposure, terrain category, panel dimensions and installation configuration.
